BBE is a recently launched (January 2008) research group within the IMEP (Dept 2: Organization and Vulnerability of Ecological Systems) that aims at developing integrative studies in ecology and biology, focusing on the effect of natural/anthropogenic stress on living species (aquatic invertebrates and plants), mainly by organic or/and inorganic xenobiotics (HAPs, PCBs, ETM, nanoparticles).
In the beginning of the XXIe century physical stress and chemical contaminants constitute some of the main topics for environmental and human safety. The assessments of these contaminants and of their biological effects needs to the combination of different approach levels (cellular, tissues individuals, populations and biocoenoses), and an articulation between in situ approaches and micro and mesocosm experiments. The main topics of the team are: (i) ecotoxicity of nanoparticles and their by products, (ii) evaluation of toxic effects of metal contaminants (ETM) on biota, (iii) use of eukaryotes use in bioremediation of contaminated soils. Our main biological models are plants and aquatic invertebrates [freshwater and lagoonal] such as Hydrozoa, flatworms, waterfleas and freshwater shrimps/gammarids.
